SkillsUSA South Dakota is the state association of SkillsUSA — a national partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to prepare students for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations across South Dakota.

Any South Dakota middle school, high school, or post-secondary student enrolled in a career & technical education program can join through their school chapter.

Members compete in career & technical contests, run chapter service projects, hold leadership offices, attend Fall FOCUS and the state conference, and build the employability skills employers ask for through the SkillsUSA Framework.

No. Competition is one of the biggest draws, but many members focus on leadership, community service, or professional development. Talk with your advisor about the path that fits you.

Visit our Get Involved page and submit the chapter inquiry form. A SkillsUSA South Dakota team member will guide your advisor through chartering, advisor training, and your first state conference.

Students must be registered as members before they can compete at the state conference. Register early in the school year so your chapter never loses a competitor to a paperwork deadline — check the Events page for current dates.

Each spring SD students compete in 100+ career & technical contests judged by South Dakota industry pros. State gold medalists advance to the National Leadership & Skills Conference.

Fall FOCUS is the state's fall leadership kickoff, where chapters set their program of work, students train with the state officer team, and advisors get the year's competition updates.

The SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference takes place each summer in Atlanta, Georgia, bringing together thousands of state medalists from across the country.

There is a small annual membership fee shared between national, state, and chapter dues. Many SD schools and our sponsors offset that cost — ask your advisor.

Yes. Contest committees need consumables, tooling, and equipment every year, and SkillsUSA South Dakota provides a 1099 for in-kind, supply, equipment, and prize donations.
